How to Pray

Thought for the Day:

" Mentally light millions of candles everywhere in the whole cosmos to the Glory of God. Fill the entire space with luminous candles. Bow down before this wonderful Divinity, which is the Soul of your soul."

How to Pray
Prayer for Rapid Growth and Evolution
Question:
'I have no book of prayers, and I don't know what prayer to use. Can you, revered Swamiji, give a prayer for use?'
Answer:
Pray from the heart. Your heart's prayer is the best prayer. Let your heart voice thus: 'Lord, You are now with me, yet I am unable to see you. Grant me Grace, empower me to behold You. You are my Light. You are my Father. You are my eternal Mother. You are the Breath of my breath. You are everything. From all sides, at all times, You are watching me, seeing me, blessing me. You are in the children, in the creatures great and small. You are everywhere. Why don't You reveal Yourself to me?
'Lord, lead me, guide me, purify me, render me peaceful, wise, strong, noble, saintly. As You are in me, express Yourself through me. Let me be a channel for the flow of Your Nature and Qualities. Not my personality, but Your Personality which is full of Perfection, finds Its expression through me. I don't want my will to be done, for my will is imperfect, exposed to wrong impulse, full of limitations. Thy Will is wonderful, perfect, omnipotent. Let Thy Will be done through me.
'Lord, my intelligence makes many mistakes. What it thinks to be the right thing is often to be not so. Let Thy Intelligence which is omniscient guide my intelligence along the right and fruitful lines. My heart is limited in its love; sometimes I love people who are beneficial to me, and cease loving them when they no more serve my interests. Let Thy Love which is unconditioned rule my heart. My best plans to protect my interests are not free from unforeseen difficulties. Anything can easily burden me with cares and worries. Let Thy Wisdom, Thy Light, Thy Care, Thy Grace, conduct my life and preserve me in the experience of Thy Peace, Thy Power, Thy Happiness.
'Look, O Lord, there Your sun shines. Adorations to You, God, in that sunshine. Adorations to You, God, in the form of all these men, women and children. Adorations to You in the form of all those that are near and dear to me. Adorations to You, God, in the form of all that is wonderful, great, grand, sublime, inspiring, sustaining, helping, guiding. Adorations to You, God, in the form of the breath without which I cannot live.'
Thus, through such small attempts at pouring out your heart in spontaneous prayer, put yourself in touch with the Lord's abundance, here, there, everywhere, at all times. Nothing that you say to God is uttered in vain, for He is all-hearing and infinite creative Intelligence, Power, Grace, Fullness. Many are the blessings of such a prayer. The psychological, emotional, psychic, spiritual, material, physical results of such prayers are priceless, and they add rapidly and immensely to the stature of your inner spiritual growth and evolution.
The Language of God is the Same Everywhere
Question:
What happens to those who turn their hearts to God?
Answer:
Their hearts flower and bloom in love to such an extent that they begin to converse with birds like St. Francis. They begin to speak words of wisdom and power. Their lives are most fruitful. Their presence is a joy and a healing, a blessing and an enrichment. They are the real knowers of the meaning of life: they are the real enjoyers of the full value of life.
The human eyes and the intelligence which sees through them are not able to see God, but God is seeing us all right. The human ears are not able to hear God, but God is hearing us all right. The human heart feels God is somewhere away in the clouds, but God is already there within its own inner chambers. When intelligence is rendered pure and luminous, and lit up with the light of the inner divine Being, man sees God as our physical eyes see the sun, the moon, the trees, the seas, the light. These are the wonderful truths that you discover as your entire inner nature is uplifted and refined. The knowledge of the fundamental spiritual truths and realities comes to you automatically. The language of God is the same everywhere.
Go on developing your love for the Divine. When you see beautiful fruits and flowers, mentally offer them to God, the supreme Creator, who is everywhere and watching everything. And then, what happens? God, who is all-seeing, at once watches, registers and responds to your simple act. In consequence His Light and Grace shine upon your countenance. He increases your inner purity, your inner peace, strength, happiness, and your prosperity. He develops your faith, heightens your capacities, and renders your intelligence intuitive, your soul inspired. He increases your sense of the divine Presence. He makes you do good things. He prompts you to give a contribution to good works. He inspires you to serve and to sacrifice. As you advance, God pours His own Light, Love, Grace, through you to all creation.
Towards the Divine
Our movement towards the Divine is nothing other than a grand growth of our love, our wisdom, our strength, our sweetness, our brilliance, our perfection.
As a result of this turn towards the all-seeing, all-beautiful, all-peaceful, all-luminous, all-perfect Divinity, many of the higher qualities resident in our inner spiritual being are simultaneously unfolded into our outer life.
Perfection
Turn all thy life into divine Light. Let thy speech flow from the Honey within. Render thy energies into divine Power, and convert all of thy inner being into divine Perfection.

Prepare the Ground

Thought for the Day:

" God experiences Himself in man. The moment you know God and experience Him, God experiences Himself in you."

Prepare the Ground for the Grand Aim

Prayer and Meditation are two aspects of the same movement towards God. Prayer is indispensable, but it may not be the prayer that is generally understood by people. There are hundreds of forms of prayer.
What really is prayer? A means, by which you are seeking to commune with the divine presence and power. It is a condition in you heart and mind, by which you put away your little personality and its problems and put yourself in tune with the divine Reality.
Meditation is an advanced development on this line. In meditation you have transcended the conditions of prayer. You are not merely conscious of the divine power. You are not merely contacting the divine presence, but you have become one with it. Everything in you is lost in Godhead. In meditation you become as God Himself. This is an advanced stage which is not given to one, unless one constantly, by small prayers, goodness, service and divine knowledge, seeks to prepare oneself for this condition and high attainment.
By day-after-day's struggle and striving, all in us must be constantly prepared towards this high aim. We should have prayed millions of times, before we can arrive at the first step in meditation. Besides that, as nature has produced us, we are very crude. Though our bodies are clean and neatly dressed, though our minds are disciplined and trained by the university, yet the dangerous devil of passion, lust, greed, selfishness, hypocrisy and falsehood have to be completely thrown out of your system. It is only then, that we are really civilised. It is only then, that we are cultured. It is only then that we are eligible for the grand aim.
Everything in us has to be transformed, transfigured and prepared. We have to throw out the roots of nature, which are so ugly, nasty, barbarous. In order this may be achieved, there should be not only growth in love and purity in us, but growth in every refinement. There has to be an exaltation of the heart and the mind, a readiness to take more pain and to work more hard, a readiness to sacrifice animal functions for the sake of development of the higher powers. Simultaneously with this grand process of transformation and divinisation there must be continued prayer, and meditation. There must be also some devotional act, deeds of divine love.
The point is, there are many misconceptions. Unfortunately, people take up some book on meditation and fascinated by this interesting subject, they try to meditate. Now, they meditate for ten years. They come and ask, why there is no result. Therefore I have sought to draw your attention to the grand preparatory ground that has to be discovered. When you prepare the inner basis and foundation, meditation comes to you automatically.
Sometimes it so happens, as you are walking in the street, that your heart is uplifted and inspired. As you walk, you feel: 'these human beings are expressions and embodiments of God. Is this nature merely a material formation? Or is it infinite Godhead?'
Such thoughts are automatically thrown up from your inner heart. Let us not forget that you are yourself undeniably the grand manifestation of God. Your heart is an ocean of infinite knowledge. All the millions and trillions of books are there inside yourself. When you have prepared the ground as I have just described, automatically new ideas, new intuitions and illuminations spring from your heart.
When everything in you is ready and radiant, you will see that wisdom is being poured into you; indescribable grace and strength are being poured into you. At this stage, even if you do not want God, everything in you will be turned towards God. At this stage, even if you do not want to pray and meditate, all in you automatically sinks into prayer and meditation.
A time arrives in your life, when even if you do not want to meditate, automatically everything in you strives to meditate. A time arrives in your life, when even if you do not want God, God will be working in you, through you, around you, with you, and you will be able to perceive Him. Those who have arrived at a higher stage of perfection, will be able to perceive Him in you. All that you have to do, is to discover that the goal of God-Consciousness is already in you.
Let us take away the animal about us. Let us wash out all that is earthly and human. Let us polish our mirror so thoroughly, that whenever we look into it, it is not at ourselves that we are looking, but at Reality, at God.
Before we can experience infinite Truth - God - as absolute perfection, absolute peace and joy we first have to experience God as love in the heart of the people surrounding us. We have to experience God as life and its endless dignity within ourselves as well as in others. We have to experience God through the unfoldment of great goodness and selflessness - selfless service and selfless love for all creation. We have to experience God through the unfoldment of higher virtues, through the power of great perseverance and rare patience, for God dwells in these qualities. This is the base.
It is when this base is erected that we can experience God in visions and intuitions. When the base is ready and the heart is rendered pure then higher powers of perception unfold themselves and one experiences what is hidden to others: the presence of the Divine, a strength that is superhuman, a peace that cannot be disturbed through the challenges and tragedies of daily life however great they be.
Before we can experience God as He is in Himself, we have to experience Him as He reveals Himself in those around us. We have to grow morally and ethically through hard work. And work means discipline, Yoga, sacrifice, a good character, a character free from animal qualities like hatred, jealousy, envy, anger, vanity etc.
One has to experience God in intense prayer and meditation, before one can demand the experience of God as unending perfection, eternal life, endless, beginningless Truth.

Inner Existence is God

Thought for the Day:

" These Mantras are themselves the Divinity. Mantra is sound, sound is thought, thought is consciousness, consciousness is Truth. Truth is Perfection, eternal life, infinite Joy, absolute Peace."
Swami Omkarananda

Your Inner Existence Is God

The field of your experience is not only this material universe but the world of reality, the world of the Divine, which is here and everywhere - in your existence, in your being, at the heart of your life. Let us see, what this centre of your life, the ground of your existence, is. We shall touch that now in your Self. Close your eyes: What do you see? Are thoughts arising? Are feelings arising? Do you observe these thoughts and feelings? Stand back from the thoughts. Stand back from the feelings. You can see them. You can describe their nature. You are other than your thoughts and feelings. As such you are the master of what you are experiencing. You can reject some thoughts if you don't want them. You can take adequate distance from every thought and disown it. You are other than your thoughts and feelings. You are a witness of your thoughts and feelings.
What else do you see? You are above everything that you can see. You are other than what you see. There is the psychological being with all its thoughts and feelings. There is the psychic being, there is an unconscious nature. You can observe this unconscious nature. You are other than and above the unconscious nature. You can conquer it. You can transform it. What is at the centre of your experience? What is absorbing everything? Reflect upon it.
Close your eyes and reflect upon the inner nature. Look at that which is looking at your thoughts. You go deeper into yourself. You become the observer of everything inside you. Try to observe the observer. You will touch the pure existence, which is the image of God, which has all the perfections of God. Be God-minded. Think of this being at the centre of your being, this being at the centre of all beings. Reflect upon the being in space, the being in all nature, the existence in all nature, in the whole cosmos.
There is a transcendental capacity in you, a transcendental being which is above everything you know, above everything that you are, above everything that you have experienced, above everything that you possess. It is other than all these. This pure being you are. It is your soul. It is your heart. There are no impurities in it, no darkness in it, no problems in it. In it there is boundless happiness, boundless knowledge, boundless peace, boundless beauty and music. There is everything valuable in it. It is the source of supreme values.
It is the shrine of God. It is the sanctum sanctorum of the Divine. It is the supreme Reality in us. This reality is also in others, in everything, everywhere, at all times. A boundless existence is everywhere. The presence of God is everywhere. It is all-knowing. It is all-observing,. It is all consciousness. It is all beauty. it is all freedom. It is all light. It is all harmony. It is all wealth. It is all power - real power. It is all freedom - real freedom, eternal freedom, indestructible freedom, everlasting freedom. That you are. That reality, that God, that you are at the centre of your being. That has to be known and experienced.
The more you reflect upon this central reality, the greater and stronger your knowledge of that central reality becomes. Thus you transcend human nature. Thus you solve all problems of life. You arrive at that which is the source of endless happiness, endless life, endless knowledge, endless freedom. When you have attained this, where are the problems of life? The problems of life are dissolved. You have transcended the limitations of life by the experience of the all transcendental principle in you.
God has to be contacted. Contact Him in the centre of your soul, in that pure, transcendental being, which is the same in all, in everything. If you experience the Divine there in your central being, automatically you experience the Divine in everyone and in everything, for the existence in everyone and everything is the same as existence in you.
Existence everywhere is one. It is God. It is reality. It is that which sustains our life, sustains all our experiences, all our knowing and feeling. Without that existence we are nothing. Without God we are nothing.
The real source of our happiness is not amidst our thoughts, not amidst our possessions, not in the senses of the body. It is there in the existence which is all pure. Thoughts come and go. Even if they cause some kind of happiness, it is a temporary happiness, something which quickly disappears. What disappears causes unhappiness. That which disappears is finite, has limitations and therefore cannot be the source of real happiness, the source of real strength. That which does not disappear, that which always is, that which always was and will be, that is the source or real happiness.
The existence at the centre of your being is always there. Your thoughts have come and gone. Your dreams have arisen and have disappeared. Experiences have come and gone. You have had pain and pleasure. You have experienced good and bad. All your experiences have come and gone. You have observed the changes in your body year after year. All these have come and gone. but since you were born there has always been the existence which has been observing everything, but which has not changed. It is unchanging, it is ever the same. It observes all changes. It is other than all changes. That central existence, which is above everything, which is other than everything, other than all that you can possess, all that you know, all that you can feel, is ever pure. It is the reality in you. Without that reality you cannot exist.
This existence which is the centre of your being is your basis for observing everything subjective and objective. This existence is pure being. There are no thoughts in it, no feelings. Thoughts and feelings are outside. From your existence you observe everything. Your existence is above thoughts and feelings, above the conditions of your life, above good and bad, above light and darkness. It is above everything. It is not touched by anything. It cannot be rendered impure.
Thoughts can be made impure, the psychological nature can be made impure, but not existence. it is above everything and other than everything. It is pure being. Into this pure being your personality sinks in sleep state and experiences peace and happiness.
Sages train themselves through meditation, through self-analysis, through reflection, through grace of God, to experience this central being, to sink into this existence while being awake. With eyes open, in full consciousness, in the waking state, they sink into existence and find therein boundless peace and happiness. They experience peace and happiness consciously, whereas the sleeping man experiences them unconsciously. Such a happiness enjoyed unconsciously is devoid of value.
Our nature is infinite happiness, infinite peace, infinite harmony. How do we know it? Experience shows it. Knowledge reveals it. Hundreds of sages have experienced it. Saints have experienced it. Prophets have experienced it. Philosophers have grasped it and have stated it in their works. Simple persons with love for the Divine have been touched by the grace and have experienced it.
Existence is not a vague reality, it is not devoid of colour and richness. It is richest in its content. It is riches in values. There is everything in it. You become a philosopher, a great thinker, a reflective person when you think upon this more and more. And when this knowledge sinks into your experience and conduct you become a sage, no matter what you are and what functions in life you execute.
To reflect upon this central existence, to analyse its real nature, and to know that that central existence we are in reality, is a great grace, a wondrous possibility of man. He can know himself to be God as pure existence. He can experience himself to be such. This is a great wonder, a great blessing. One who experiences this attains endless life, eternal life. He becomes immortal. He becomes indestructible. He becomes an embodiment of boundless peace and happiness. He becomes a personification of infinite love. Endless love is there in the existence. Endless light is there in the existence. It is the centre of your being.

Dream

The Science of Total Recall of your Dreams...

Believe it or not you can learn to recall most all your Dreams. With these simple techniques you can start remembering dreams within the first or second night of practice. It's sort of like self hypnosis in a way. You are simply making suggestions to your mind before you are completely asleep. This state of mind is called the borderline sleep level. It is when your brain is most likely to absorb the suggestions.
They say that certain foods can cause bad dreams. Well I don't know if that's true but, I do know from personal experience that when I eat cheese or drink milk,  I seem to have more intense dreams. Not necessarily bad dreams. Then again, sometimes when you eat food before bedtime that gives you indigestion, it might seem that it is causing you to have dreams. This is do to the fact that the indigestion is keeping you slightly awake. You know that borderline sleep level I mentioned earlier, so you are slightly aware of these dreams. There is one other thing to consider. If you are having intense dreams and they are in color then more than likely you are having a OBE. Out-body-experience or otherwise known as Astral Projection. We are not going to get into that for right now. We will on another page. All right let's get going! There are 4 easy steps to this. That's it!

1. Preparing for Bed :Try to get the body as relaxed as you can. If  you have to stretch or even do Yoga all the better. You can even meditate to clear your mind, so that that you are more prepared for the next step. You don't have to eat or refrain from eating before bedtime. You may do as you like. Try experimenting with eating different foods before bedtime and see if you get any different results in the end. Make sure you have a pen and pad handy to write with next to the bed.
2. Programing : This is the most important part. When you get to that borderline sleep level (which is right before you are completely asleep) you must tell yourself over and over again that you will remember all your dreams and you will wake up after each dream and write down your experience. If you don't like having to repeat all that then try tape recording yourself saying these things. Make sure that you tape at least 10 - 15 min. worth. That should be sufficient.
3. Taking Notes :This is also very important. If you successfully wake up
after each dream, then you must write down everything you can remember in detail. Write down whether the dream was in color or black and white. This is why we will keep a pen and pad next the bed. Make sure not to put it in the bed with you. You don't want to end up stabbing yourself in your sleep. Then you must try to go right back to sleep. Keeping the pen and pad handy. Hopefully you will go right into another dream and repeat the process.
4. Reviewing the Night :Now it is time to review the night. You will be amazed at how many dreams you actually had that night! I usually find that I have 10 - 15 dreams a night and sometimes more. Everyone dreams and everyone dreams many times a night, they just don't know they do until they try something like this. Make special note of dreams that are in full-blown color, for you will want to reference them once you start studying Astral Projection.
